Antonio Madero Professor of Mexican and Latin American Politics and Economics in the Department of Government, Vice Provost for International Affairs in The Office of the Provost, Senior Advisor for International Studies to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Chairman of The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies at Harvard University
Recently appointed Vice Provost for International Affairs, Professor Jorge Domínguez oversees a variety of University-wide international research and education initiatives and policies. He works with deans and faculty across the University to create and support new international research collaborations such as the newly established David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS)/Harvard Brazil Office in São Paulo and will seek to increase international study opportunities for undergraduates consistent with Harvard College s established priorities.
A distinguished scholar in comparative politics and international relations, Professor Domínguez is the author of To Make a World Safe for Revolution (1989) and Cuba: Order and Revolution (1978), both from Harvard University Press. With Omar Everleny Pérez Villanueva and Lorena Barberia, he co-edited The Cuban Economy at the Start of the Twenty-First Century (Harvard/DRCLAS, 2004). With Chappell Lawson, he co-edited Mexico s Pivotal Democratic Election: Candidates, Voters, and the Presidential Campaign of 2000 (Stanford, 2004) and with Michael Shifter, he co-edited Constructing Democratic Governance in Latin America (Johns Hopkins, 2003). His latest book is Between Compliance and Conflict: East Asia, Latin America, and the New Pax Americana, co-edited with Byung Kook Kim (Routledge, 2005).
Before taking on this new post, Domínguez was the director of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs for a decade. He is the chairman of the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, a member of the Executive Committee of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS), and in 2004 chaired the Provost s Task Force on International Issues. Renowned courses he has taught at Harvard include U.S.-Latin American Relations, Comparative Politics of Latin America, and The Cuban Revolution, 1956-1971: A Self-Debate.
