PPIP at-a-Glance
The purpose of the Brazil Public Policy Immersion Program is to expose students to the complexity of the challenges confronting the world's eighth largest economy by giving them an opportunity to undertake on-site research projects related to improving the nation's government, education and health systems. Between June 1st and August 4th, 2009 14 students from Harvard College, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Harvard Law School and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences participated in this 9-week intensive program working with some of Brazil's leading institutions in São Paulo. In the third week of the program students traveled to Brasília, the nation's capital since 1960, for a comprehensive introduction to the policy challenges of Latin America's largest democracy. Professor Alex Keyssar, Mathhew W. Stirling Jr. Professor of History and Social Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, led the one week trip to Brasília. In the final week of the program students presented the results of their projects in a capstone seminar that included the participation of host organizations, Brazilian academics and students.

The PPIP Program counts on the full support of the DRCLAS Brazil Studies Program. The PPIP program is coordinated by Lorena Barberia, who is a Program Associate at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University and who holds a Ph.D. in public administration and government. Marina de Moura, Program Assistant in the DRCLAS Brazil Office, also provides support to students, as well as coordinates host family stays and programmatic activities. Marcio Siwi, DRCLAS’ Cambridge-based Program Officer, is the point person for pre-departure logistics and also helps to coordinate orientation activities in São Paulo and the one-week field visit to Brasília.

Target Results:
•    Provide substantive and targeted immersion opportunities for students in Portuguese
•    Contribute to the academic study and professional plans of participating students
•    Advance in a meaningful way the work of the host organizations
•    Enrich discussion and debate through participation of Harvard College and graduate students
•    Encourage comparative and collaborative research between Harvard and Brazilian scholars
•    Forge new relationships and strengthen existing ones with leading policy-focused host organizations in Brazil
