Collaborative Public Health Field Course: Group Projects
>> Guidelines for Proposals and Presentations
Group projects will be an important component of this course. Students will work together in small teams to develop a research proposal related to a specific infectious disease. There are a total of five teams. In the rural area, one team will focus on leishmaniasis and the other on schistosomiasis. In the urban area, one team will focus on HIV/AIDS, one team on dengue, and one team on leptospirosis.
At least one faculty member will be assigned to each group. The faculty lead (or leads) will work with her/his group for the entire period of preliminary research, proposal development, and presentation. Other faculty and staff will be available and can be called on for assistance, as needed. The faculty lead will be responsible for identifying some examples of types of projects or proposals that students may want to develop.
The goals for the group projects are:
1) To define a question (one or more) that needs to be answered in
order to control or reduce the burden from the specific disease that the group is addressing.
2) To develop a feasible research proposal that would help to answer
this question.
3) To gather the necessary data from electronic databases, published
literature, discussions with local researchers, staff, residents, and others to develop a research proposal.
4) To draw on the diverse backgrounds of students in the group, who
will bring different skills and experiences to the project.
5) To present the proposal to the local community (may include clinic
staff, community health workers, residents, others).
6) To present the final proposal to the entire class (and others from
Fiocruz-Bahia and elsewhere) at the end of the course.
