Thursday, February 21st - La Ciudad (Riker, 1999) - A narrative snapshot of a side of New York City that is rarely seen: the city of illegal immigrants, the homeless, seasonal workers, sweatshops, and laborers from Manhattan’s Latin American neighborhoods. The twisting story lines of four different vignettes are intertwined in this courageous film, which is the result of the director’s intensive collaboration with the immigrant community over a five-year period.
Thursday, March 6th - Al Otro Lado (Loza, 2004) – This drama about the bonds between children and absent parents follows the story of three children as they attempt to deal with realities of immigration in their societies. A Cuban boy who lives in poverty with his mother longs to visit his father in the United States, a Moroccan girl attempts to reunite with her father, and in Mexico, and a boy disobeys his father to visit a strange lagoon.
Thursday, March 20th - Guest Worker (Hill, 2006) – The story of 66-year-old Candelario, who has been coming to the United States for 40 years in order to provide for his family. Without benefits or retirement, he battles against the elements, his age, and backbreaking work, returning year after year as a guest worker.
Thursday, April 3rd - Things I Left in Havana (Gutierrez, 1998) – In this film about the clash of culture and politics, three Cuban sisters arrive in Madrid in search for a new beginning, and meet a distant aunt who helps them to understand and adapt to their new surroundings. Comic relief is provided by another Cuban immigrant who tries varying seduction techniques on all three sisters.
Thursday, April 24th - Farmingville (Sandoval, Tambini, 2004) - The attempted murder of two Mexican day laborers catapults the Long Island town of Farmingville into national headlines, unmasking a new frontline of the border wars -- suburbia. Blending the stories of town residents and day laborers, the documentary Farmingville reveals the human impact of mismanaged national policies that lead to fear, racism and violence.
Thursday, May 1st - Estamos Aquí (Baker, 2006) - Georgetown, Delaware is a small, traditionally white community evolving socially, politically, and economically in the midst of a large immigration wave. The struggles of two Guatemalan families in search of opportunity and employment shed light on the challenges facing millions of Latin Americans who have come to this country in search of the 'American Dream'.
All films start at 6:00pm and will be held in the Tsai Auditorium at 1730 Cambridge St.
