Culture and the Markets in Latin America

The intellectual challenge of how to elaborate a cultural framework and approach to the market transformations on the status of literature, arts and culture in contemporary societies is the major goal of this collaborative initiative. Scholars from the U.S., England, Brazil, Peru, Chile and Argentina gathered in Buenos Aires, Argentina in August 2005 to explore on the interrelations between market and culture and between economic and cultural realms. The workshop, Culture and the Markets in Latin America, examined the ways in which the market is framing literary, artistic and cultural production, as well as the relationship between literature and capitalism in Latin America. Professor Cárcamo-Huechante  co-edited a book on this issue in collaboration with Alejandra Laera (Universidad de Buenos Aires) and Álvaro Fernández-Bravo (Universidad de San Andrés), El Valor de la cultura. Arte, literatura y mercado en América Latina, (Beatriz Viterbo Editora, 2007) with the support of DRCLAS and RLL.
