Street Medicine

Street Medicine HSI

HSI participants accompany doctors and medical students as they treat the homeless of Santiago.  All doctors and medical students volunteer their Friday nights to work with this population and students are welcome to participate in this initiative.

“[Street Medicine] really gave me a new understanding of poverty in Chile and in the world, and because it was so hands-on, we got a new understanding of the relationship between poverty and health.”  -Priyanka Mitra, HSI ’09 participant

“Street Medicine was very interesting. Our job was to talk to the patients, ask them why they are sick and about their lives on the streets. It was incredible to see doctors spending their weekend nights caring for homeless people. It was a very interesting and unusual experience for me.”
  -Matthew Sachs, HSI ’09 participant

“Street Medicine was definitely eye opening and a great opportunity to dive into a large public health problem in Santiago.”  -Shiv Gaglani, HSI ’09 participant
