Discover how national identity is forged in the aftermath of conquest in a presentation by our 2026 Visiting Scholar, **Christopher Carter**, on his current research. Carter is an Assistant Professor of Politics and John L. Nau III Assistant Professor of the History and Principles of Democracy at the **University of Virginia,** and a Research Associate at **UC Berkeley’s Center on the Politics of Development.** His award‑winning research, including his 2025 book ***The Long Shadow of Extraction: The Origins of Indigenous Autonomy Demands*** **(Princeton University Press)**, examines how historical patterns of extraction and domination shape contemporary Indigenous politics across the Americas.



 

 ### Christopher Carter DRCLAS Central America Visiting Scholar, Spring 2026

**Christopher Carter,** is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics and John L. Nau III Assistant Professor of the History and Principles of Democracy at the University of Virginia. He is also a Research Associate at the Center on the Politics of Development at the University of California, Berkeley. His research examines the historical foundations of Indigenous groups' demands for autonomy in the Americas. His book, *The Long Shadow of Extraction: The Origins of Indigenous Autonomy Demands*, will be released with Princeton University Press in summer 2025. The research for his book project won the 2020 APSA Best Fieldwork Award and the 2021 Juan Linz Prize for Best Dissertation in the Comparative Study of Democracy. His work on Latin American politics has been published or is forthcoming in American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, Perspectives on Politics, Party Politics, and the Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics.
