This event will explore the intersections of gender, race, and democratic processes across the Americas, with a focus on addressing the democratic deficit that marginalizes certain voices.

Debora Thome will discuss how gender shapes political ambition in Brazil, while Mariela Noles Cotito will examine the impact of ethnoracial legislation on gender equality and inclusion in Peru.

Yanilda González will address the persistence of authoritarian policing in democratic societies and its disproportionate impact on marginalized communities.

Together, the panelists will offer insights into reforms that could enhance women’s political representation, protect minority groups, and promote more equitable governance.

Speakers: **Debora Thome**, Postdoctoral Research, Fundação Getulio Vargas. **Mariela Noles Cotito**, 2024-25 Custer Visiting Scholar, DRCLAS; Professor of Discrimination and Public Policy, Universidad del Pacífico.

Moderator: **Yanilda González**, Ford Foundation Assistant Professor of Public Policy.
