From July 10 to 12, 2024, Brazil hosted the first-ever Third Continental Conference on Afro-Latin American Studies at the University of São Paulo (USP), marking a pivotal moment in the academic and cultural landscape surrounding Afro-Latin American scholarship. The event, organized by the Afro-Latin American Research Institute in collaboration with the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and several leading Brazilian institutions, became a critical platform for discussing Afro-Latin American identities, racial justice, and leadership.

The three-day conference featured over 200 panel discussions and 31 roundtables, bringing together scholars, activists, and policymakers from across the Americas. Sessions explored a wide range of topics, including the intersection of race and law, gender dynamics in academia, and the role of cultural expressions in social movements. These discussions sparked dynamic exchanges and provided fresh perspectives on advancing racial justice and leadership in the region.

One of the key themes emphasized by both speakers and participants was the urgent need for sustained investment in Afro-Latin American studies. Many highlighted that increased funding and institutional support are crucial for advancing research and fostering deeper dialogues in the field. The conference served as a call to action for universities and policymakers to prioritize these critical areas of study.

As the conference concluded, it underscored the importance of continued academic engagement and leadership in Afro-Latin American issues. The event's discussions are expected to shape future academic efforts and contribute to broader conversations on racial justice and cultural identity across Latin America.
