#  In Memory, Professor Otto T. Solbrig

The David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) laments the passing of Professor Otto T. Solbrig. As interim DRCLAS Faculty Director in 2000, he brought the subject of ecology to the table long before it was popular, managing to bring 40 agronomists, economists and ecologists from Argentina, Chile, the United States and Europe for three days during a snowstorm to discuss *Globalization and the Rural Environment*. Solbrig was Bussey Professor of Biology \[Emeritus\] at the Organismic and Evolutionary Biology Department. He was internationally known for his studies on evolutionary, genetic, and population biology of plants. As Carlos Klink (Ph.D '92) and Adriana Moreira (Ph.D '93) remind us, Professor Solbrig "coordinated an international program with UNESCO (the “Decade of the Tropics” program) to understand how tropical savannas are structured ecologically and what role biodiversity plays on the functioning of these ecosystems. He promoted partnerships and trained many Ph.Ds. and post-docs who worked in the Cerrado savannas of Brazil, the Venezuelan llanos, and the Uruguayan and Argentine (his native country) pampas". We will miss him and honor his outstanding contribution to DRCLAS and to the field of ecology.
