SUMMARY:Predatory Extractivism Panel Series- Contested Spaces: Controlling Narratives and Territories
DESCRIPTION:<p>	Since the Fundão and Córrego do Feijão dams collapsed in 2015 and 2019, respectively, local communities and the mining companies responsible for the catastrophes have battled over the causes of the failures as well as the control of impacted territories. Brazilian journalism professor André Luís Carvalho will share his experiences working with citizen journalists in affected communities to co-create and maintain media platforms to preserve memory and denounce violations. </p><p>	<strong>Learn more about the panel series on "<a href="internal:/predatory-extractivism?cb=1934225526&amp;admin_panel=1" target="_blank" title="">Predatory Extractivism: Brazil's Largest Mining Catastrophes in a Global Context</a>" and <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/predatory-extractivism-brazil-s-mining-catastrophes-in-a-global-context-tickets-818859680347?aff=oddtdtcreator" target="_blank" title="">register to attend</a>.</strong></p><p>	<strong>Moderator</strong>: <strong><a href="https://hls.harvard.edu/faculty/alicia-yamin/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Alicia Yamin</a></strong>, Lecturer on Law, Harvard Law School </p><p>	<strong>Speaker</strong>: <strong><a href="https://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do;jsessionid=8C677CA79C883D398F52C33C88D23744.buscatextual_0" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">André Luís Carvalho</a></strong>, Adjunct Professor of Journalism, Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) </p><p>	<strong>Discussants</strong>: <strong><a href="https://g1.globo.com/profissao-reporter/noticia/2023/05/31/mulher-que-perdeu-familia-no-desastre-de-mariana-se-forma-advogada-e-briga-por-reparacao-tenho-que-lutar.ghtml" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Mônica dos Santos</a></strong>, Member, Fundão Dam Commission of Affected People and <strong><a href="https://hls.harvard.edu/faculty/tyler-giannini/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Tyler Giannini</a></strong>, Clinical Professor of Law, Harvard Law School </p><p>	<em>Presented in collaboration with the Department of Global Health and Population (HSPH), Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, the Center for International Development, the Human Rights Program at HLS, and The Center for the Study of Natural Resources Extraction and Society at Clark University.</em></p><p>	 </p>
