SUMMARY:What Do Venezuelans Have to Do to Make the Transition Work?
DESCRIPTION:
Over the past two years, the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) has convened two high‑level seminars and a semester-long Study Group to examine Venezuela’s political landscape and the prospects for democratic change. These sessions — held in April 2024 and December 2025 and monthly meetings from January to June 2026— has brought together scholars, practitioners, and policy experts to assess evolving conditions and debate possible scenarios. These conversations have been rich and timely, but the many critical dimensions of Venezuela’s complex situation require continued sustained analysis.

Venezuela is presently undergoing a highly unusual and uncertain political transition. The removal of former President Nicolás Maduro from power and the subsequent transfer of executive authority under U.S. pressure has accelerated the situation, raised the stakes, prompting a confusing governance scenario despite the attempts by provisional president Delcy Rodríguez and her brother Jorge Rodíguez, president of the National Assembly, to convey a semblance of continuity. The partial decapitation of the Venezuelan regime and the close follow-up by the Trump administration brings a window of opportunity for a deeper political change that could eventually turn into a democratization process.

This event is a public session of the Venezuela Study Group. It will be focused on the challenges of Venezuela’s democratic forces to make possible a shift toward democratization.

This event will be conducted in Spanish.
