Juan C. Alvarez-Yepiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Water and Environmental Sciences at the Sonora Institute of Technology. He holds a PhD in Ecology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where he received the 2014 Outstanding PhD student award.

He is a past grantee of the Fulbright-Garcia Robles program and a current member of the National System of Researchers in Mexico. He coordinates the Integrative Ecology Lab, which aims to conduct and integrate research across disciplines and ecological scales to face global challenges such as the rising risk of climate-related extreme events.

He has authored numerous articles and book chapters on extreme climatic events, land-use change, plant and landscape ecology, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration. His current research addresses the interactions of climate, ecosystems, and rural societies, particularly from highly vulnerable regions in northwestern Mexico.
