Center for Public Service & Engaged Scholarship Summer Internships

In collaboration with the Center for Public Service and Engaged Scholarship (CPSES), DRCLAS will offer up to eight co-sponsored internship slots within either SIP Brazil, Chile and/or Mexico for currently enrolled Harvard College students placed with the specified social impact-driven organizations. College students with relevant experience in public service and Spanish language skills are invited to apply! FUNDACION 99 Organization Description: Fundación 99. We live in a highly segregated society where our family name, gender, race or birthplace defines a good part of our fate. Inequality gaps are not only significant, but have become extremely polarized, thus increasing the concentration of wealth and social tension. In a world reaching historic levels of development, there is still 800 million people who live with less than 2 dollars a day, 175 million children who do not have access to early education (UNICEF, 2019), and at the pace we are going, we lack 99 years to level the field between women and men in political, social and economic matters (WEF, 2020). This is not about some people winning while many others suffer. We all lose with inequality.  A highly inequal structure prevents social cohesion, increases tension among individuals, makes societies burst and makes sustainable development impossible to build. We believe the best way to achieve sustainable social development is by reducing inequality and we do this by intervening from three specific areas: education, public spaces and infrastructure and local economic development in developing countries. We coordinate these three areas horizontally with gender equity, inclusion and community engagement. In order to do it we focus on the most vulnerable population, particularly in rural areas, where 46% of the world population live today (WB, 2020). 

For us, it is not about the good and the bad, nor that some are the problem and the rest just need a solution. We think both the problem and the solution are part of an indivisible phenomenon to which we all belong and must work collaboratively as a society, so that the 1% concentrating approximately 26% of the world’s wealth understand their responsibility with the remaining 99%. That is how Fundación 99 was born; because we can all build a better society if we have the chance to develop with the qualities and tools we have, however, despite we all have the skills, we do not have the same opportunities.

  Internship Description: Fundación 99 is a non-profit organization based in Chile. We are focus in reducing inequality gaps in 3 areas: education, public spaces and infrastructure and local economic development.The intern will be working close to the executive director in the strategic development area. The intern will take leadership in the following products:

Product 1 (20%): Mapping different donors / funding that might be aligned with our goals and describe potential opportunities. In order to set expectations: the delivery can be an Excel with the list of the donors/funds, time, strategic areas, scope.

Product 2: (30%): Review and feedback to our covid strategic plan for 2020 in terms of education.

Product 3 (40%): Elaboration of local economic development plan.

Product 3 (10%): Review (not translate) our English website
  Intern Qualifications: - Language skills: Fluent in Spanish and English
- Social interests in gender issues, education, local economic development, urbanism and rural areas.
- Social commitment, non-profit expertise

Igarapé Institute

Availability: Remote 
Portuguese Level: Intermediary Portuguese preferred Field: Human Rights, Technology, Urban Planning, Public Policies, Research, Justice and Security, Security and Conflict Prevention, Migration and Refuge, Climate Change   The Igarapé Institute is an independent think and do tank devoted to evidence-based policy and action on complex security, justice and development challenges in Brazil, Latin America, and Africa. The Institute’s goal is to stimulate debate, foster connections and trigger action. Based in the South, the Igarapé Institute undertakes diagnostics, generates awareness, and co-designs solutions with public and private partners, often with the use of new technologies.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The intern will provide qualitative and quantitative analysis on the themes and activities of the Institute's programs in support to the program/project coordinator. For this position, the intern is expected to work in close collaboration with the research team, producing innovative content, research inputs, news monitoring and supporting internal and external communication of the projects, contributing to generate visibility to the research results.
The intern is likely to carry out research activities within one or more of Igarape's Institute program, depending on its background, including i. citizen security; ii. cyber security; iii.civic space; and iv. climate and security.
Successfull candidates should have quantitative analysis skills and support Igarape's research team updating its various online platforms and carry out technical analysis on homicidal violence, violence against women, arms and ammunitions, environmental crimes, and many more. A desired ability is to write research finds to a broader audience. The candidate will have the opportunity to participate in meetings with policymakers as well as events organized by the institute and its partners happening during its internship. By the end of the internship it is expected that the candidate will not only have learned more about Igarape's themes, but also how to produce high quality research and how to communicate them to inform public policies.

Interns will be expected to: § Daily reading and selection of important news related to the project in which it operates. § Draw up a list of the main points covered in the most critical information of the day. § Monitor the preparation of the reports of the project that is involved. § Update numbers and data of the project involved in spreadsheets; § Support the research team in both routine tasks and activities on demand, contributing to the good performance of the area according to the established goals. § Writing texts for publication on websites, blogs, and social media, among other media.   INTERN QUALIFICATIONS Preferably Social Science or humanity areas and knowledge in excel. Students are prefferd to have an intermediate Portuguese level.

Otros Dreams en Accion (ODA)   Organization Description: Otros Dreams en Accion is a grassroots organization for and by our deported and returned community. We strive to help folks who have been deported or have had a forced return to adapt to living in Mexico, and we also create artistic events to help our community express their emotions. We try to lead decompressing sessions where our community can get to know each other and process everything they have been through.

VÍA EDUCACIÓN Organization Description:

Via is a non-profit civil education, which seeks to generate development opportunities through the design, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of educational strategies. It seeks to influence educational quality, public policy, citizen participation and corporate responsibility. Its objective as an organization is to propose methods to overcome poverty through education and generating opportunities for sustainable social development.
