About the Speaker
Gabriela Ortiz, alumna of London’s City University, studied composition under Mario Lavista, Julio Estrada, and Simon Emmerson. She is renowned for her work commissioned by the LA Philharmonic and the NY Philharmonic. Ortiz’s politically engaged ballet, Revolución diamantina, showcases her unique compositional voice, blending diverse traditions from folk to avant-garde. Championed by Gustavo Dudamel, Ortiz's work has earned numerous accolades, including the Bellas Artes Gold Medal and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Ortiz teaches at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and is a member at El Colegio Nacional. Her vivid orchestral textures and complex, rhythmic structures distinguish her as a leading composer of her generation.
