Harvard DRCLAS Launches Amazon Rainforest Immersion Program with Focus on Sustainability and Regional Collaboration
The inaugural edition of the Harvard Amazon Rainforest Immersion (HARI) program took place in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, from August 7-17, 2024, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore critical issues such as land conservation, indigenous cosmovision and knowledge, illegal gold mining, and environmental sustainability. The program, organized by the Harvard DRCLAS Brazil Office and the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability in partnership with Academia Amazônia Ensina, the State University of Amazonas (UEA), and Idesam, aimed to strengthen connections between Harvard University and the Amazon region.
The program featured an intensive schedule of lectures, site visits, and discussions, with six of the ten days spent on an expedition boat traveling up the Amazon and Uatumã Rivers.
The inaugural cohort of 21 participants ranged from Harvard College freshmen to Doctoral students from several institutions of the Amazon Region, representing a wide array of fields. This diversity enriched the discussions and learning experiences throughout the program. Harvard faculty members Marcia Castro, Scot Martin, Scott Edwards, and Naomi Oreskes were among the distinguished participants, with Edwards and Oreskes embarking on their first journey into the Amazon.
To ensure a well-rounded perspective, the program also included contributions from regional experts and researchers from institutions such as COIAB, Fundação Amazônia Sustentável, INPA, as well as the State University of Amazonas and the Federal University of Pará.
By the end of the experience, participants recognized the initiative's profound importance, valuing the direct engagement with their research subjects—through observing the Amazonian ecosystem, interacting with local communities, or exploring environmental challenges. This immersive approach enriched their understanding of the region and highlighted the program's unique impact on their academic and personal growth.
More detailed insights into this groundbreaking initiative will soon be featured in the Harvard Gazette. Stay tuned for exclusive coverage!
