20 Years of the DRCLAS Harvard Brazil Office

DRCLAS establishes its Brazil Office in São Paulo to strengthen academic and cultural ties between Harvard and Brazil. Since then, the office has worked alongside the Brazil Studies Program in Cambridge to expand research, teaching, and educational collaborations for Harvard faculty and students across the University in Brazil. 

This annual public health course, held in different cities and regions throughout Brazil, brings together Harvard and Brazilian faculty and students to address pressing health challenges through interdisciplinary learning and fieldwork. In its 18 editions, over 250 Harvard students attended the course.

Designed to provide Harvard students with professional experiences in Brazil, the program has hosted over 150 interns across sectors in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

President Drew Faust´s visit reinforced Harvard’s commitment to academic collaboration and engagement with Brazil.

Created a year-long fellowship, offering a recent Harvard graduate the opportunity to work at the DRCLAS Brazil Office. 

An executive education program designed to foster leadership and innovation in Early Childhood Development. Since its inception, there has been 14 editions, training over 680 Brazilian leaders and producing over 150 Action Plans through direct engagement with Harvard faculty and Brazilian experts with the support of the FMCSV. 

An immersive program in São Paulo that pairs Harvard students with Brazilian high schoolers for mentorship and educational activities. Since its launch, over 300 participants, including 150 Harvard students, have taken part.

Established to support collaborative research between Harvard and Brazilian institutions across disciplines and regions. By 2025, the fund has supported 63 research projects with collaborators from 26 Brazilian states.

Inspired by the memory of Clémence Jouët-Pastré, former Senior Preceptor in Romance Languages and Literatures, this fellowship funds Harvard students and recent graduates pursuing research in Brazil. 

The partnership established with Nexo Políticas Públicas provides a platform for Harvard experts to disseminate their research and knowledge through a variety of formats, helping to bridge Harvard with Brazilian society.

A virtual series launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing together Harvard and Brazilian experts to discuss key issues related to Brazil. Over 3,000 viewers participated, ensuring continued academic engagement during the period of social isolation.

A milestone report reflecting on a decade of impact, highlighting key achievements, participant experiences, and the program’s influence on early childhood leadership development in Brazil. 96 Harvard researchers and 141 Brazilian researchers and collaborators engaged with the initiative, producing 63 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

A full-day event featuring panel discussions on the future of science, knowledge, and education. The event brought together six Harvard faculty members, 18 panelists, and over 170 distinguished members of the Harvard-Brazil community. 

The report showcases MLAB's evolution over more than a decade, and shares some of the ways it has impacted its participants lives.

The inaugural edition of the Harvard Amazon Rainforest Immersion (HARI) offered 34 participants a unique experience for academics and students, traveling along the Amazon and Uatumã Rivers and visiting the Camp 41 research site. The program combined lectures, site visits, and discussions on multiple topics of interest to the Amazon region, and was covered by the Harvard Gazette.

The report highlights the impact of collaborations between Harvard and Brazilian institutions supported by the Fund over the past decade. It features all 63 awarded research projects, partnerships, and stories that reflect the Fund’s ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering innovation across disciplines.
